| Anselm Kiefer, Margarete |
Poem: Paul Celan, Todesfuge (see both John Felstiner and Jerome Rothenberg translations; Rothenberg is more abrupt--which gets at the leaps in Celan's language--and maybe why the leaps are there.) Consider this. A whole is broken... We'll discuss next week.
Music: Autumn Leaves (original, Les Feuilles Mortes, words by Joseph Kosma, music by Jacques Prevert) translated and re-imagined by American songwriter Johnny Mercer. The version I played for you in class was Nat King Cole. The version that Noor sent me, by Iraqi singer Ilham al-Madfai. Anyone who sings this song has to make it his or her own...
Reading: I also mentioned Czeslaw Milosz--his Nobel Prize speech. (There are excerpted versions on line.) http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/1980/milosz-lecture.html
Milosz'z favorite painter was Pierre Chardin. Maybe it's our own time that pairs him with someone like Anselm Kiefer.
